Start with **TheRundown** when you want public self-serve pricing, odds and scores under one event ID, explicit price-closure fields, and WebSocket included on Ultra. A no-card Free key lets you evaluate delayed pre-match main lines before paying. This guide shows the facts behind that choice and compares the coverage and capabilities that could make another provider fit your application.

This guide is published by TheRundown. It is a provider-authored shortlist, not an independent ranking. Prices and features below were checked against primary vendor pages on October 13, 2026. Follow the vendor links for current terms; annual equivalents, currencies, and billing units differ. No common latency benchmark is presented here.

## Compare the shortlist

Prices are monthly unless explicitly marked. TheRundown values are USD; odds-api.io prices are GBP. A sales flow or unpublished price is not evidence that a product is expensive or unavailable.

## Why choose TheRundown

The [data model](https://docs.therundown.io/reference/data-model) gives odds and scores a shared event ID, keeps participant and signed-line identities distinct, and records price closure with `closed_at`. These are concrete integration features to validate in a sample response. Public [API plans](/pricing/api) let you choose a tier without requesting a sales quote; Ultra includes real-time REST and WebSocket at $399/month.

TheRundown paid plans have a fixed subscription fee with included data-point volume. Unrequested books and markets do not add price rows to your usage, but using fewer points does not reduce the base fee. Monthly and annual plans stop at included limits by default; optional overage and weekly billing have separate terms. See the [metering rules](https://docs.therundown.io/rate-limits), scope requests to the data your application needs, and confirm `X-Datapoints` on a representative workload.

TheRundown Ultra’s $399 monthly subscription is below Unabated Concierge’s published $799 entry subscription, checked October 13, 2026 ([Unabated pricing](https://unabated.com/odds-api/concierge)). Concierge includes a betting toolkit and REST/SSE access, while Ultra is a REST/WebSocket data plan with different coverage. The Odds API has lower published polling entry prices. OpticOdds and OddsJam API require quotes, so their public pages do not support a verified lower-price claim against either.

## Start with coverage, not a headline ranking

Write a short acceptance list before requesting a quote:

- The sport and competition, including preseason or playoffs if needed.
- The exact source and market, such as an NFL full-game spread or an NBA player points prop.
- Whether you need main lines, signed alternate rungs, period markets, or futures.
- Whether the application needs scores, plays, stats, settlement, bet links, or an SGP builder alongside odds.
- Whether you will display the data to customers and which license permits it.

A provider with broader advertised coverage can be the better fit. TheRundown’s smaller published source catalog does not cover every international book, and its Free tier does not test every paid feature. Check a real response for each must-have combination. The [NFL](/nfl-odds-api), [NBA](/nba-odds-api), and [MLB](/mlb-odds-api) guides document TheRundown’s sport-specific scopes.

## Compare freshness and delivery fairly

REST is suitable for a scheduled poll, cache, or batch workflow. Push delivery can reduce repeated fetching and is useful when the application needs changes as they arrive. SSE and WebSocket have different client and reconnect requirements.

Compare **data freshness**, **transport delay**, and **HTTP response time** separately. An under-800ms provider claim, a 10ms batching window, and a 60-second refresh interval describe different measurements. A fast request can return delayed data. Measure the same sources and markets, record the timestamps and observation clock, and report the limits of that test.

For TheRundown, Free prices are delayed five minutes, Starter 60 seconds, and Pro 30 seconds. Real-time REST and WebSocket require Ultra or above. Streaming access is not a feature of every paid plan.

## Estimate a bill from a workload

Do not compare a million credits to a million objects or data points. Select an event count, market count, book count, and update cadence, then use each provider’s documented billing rules.

For example, TheRundown’s event-response metering includes an event, its score, and returned price rows. One fully priced game with three two-sided markets from three books and no `live_game_state` is **2 + (3 × 2 × 3) = 20 data points**. Ten such games would be 200 points per poll; 24 polls would be 4,800 points. Actual missing quotes reduce that count; a returned `live_game_state` adds one more score data point per event. This is an illustrative calculation; confirm with `X-Datapoints` on your own requests. See [metering](https://docs.therundown.io/rate-limits) and the [worked free-tier examples](/blog/free-sports-odds-api).

Include currency, annual commitments, streaming add-ons, overage settings, and commercial rights in the comparison. TheRundown Free and Starter are for internal or personal use; commercial end-user display starts on Pro. Other vendors’ rights must be checked in the selected package.

## Choose an evaluation path

A free plan, a time-limited trial, a scrambled trial, and conditional publishing access are different products. Test the capabilities that matter to your build. TheRundown’s no-card Free key checks its schema and delayed pre-match main lines from DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM; additional sources, props, in-play odds, and streaming require eligible paid tiers.

Keep the current feed running during a migration. Map identifiers, participants, signed lines, market scope, price format, and closure semantics before changing production traffic. Use the [quickstart](/docs/quickstart), the [data model](https://docs.therundown.io/reference/data-model), and the provider-specific comparison pages above to make the choice reviewable.

## Compare sports odds MCP integrations

For an AI workflow, compare runtime data tools, documentation search, authentication and plan access separately. The [sports odds MCP comparison](/blog/sports-odds-mcp-servers-compared) checks TheRundown, OpticOdds, SportsGameOdds and OddsPapi against their primary sources. A connected tool is not proof of populated data or a streaming entitlement.

Start with one comparable event and measure the new integration before changing production traffic. Use the field maps, authentication examples and workload calculations in these guides:

## Questions

### What is the best sports odds API in 2026?

It depends on the required books, markets, sports, freshness, data fields, and licensed use. Compare the same workload and test real responses. This guide is published by TheRundown and does not present an independent benchmark or a universal winner.

### Which providers publish API prices?

TheRundown, The Odds API, SportsGameOdds, and odds-api.io publish tier prices. OddsPapi uses a REST configurator with separate B2B streaming. Unabated publishes Concierge and Advanced prices. OpticOdds and OddsJam API route buyers through sales; SportsDataIO commercial feeds require an agreement.

### Can I compare credits, objects, requests, and data points directly?

No. They meter different things. Select the same events, markets, sources, and polling cadence, then calculate each provider’s usage under its documented rules and validate the result with response headers.

### Is TheRundown Free a real-time streaming API?

No. Free is five-minute-delayed pre-match REST data from DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM. Starter has a 60-second delay and Pro 30 seconds. Real-time REST and WebSocket begin on Ultra at $399 per month with monthly billing.
